Broken Barriers

Our assignment was to design a place to bathe for people who are handicaped....

We first began by researching different types of ancient baths/rituals and how culture played a role in bathing. I instantly knew that I wanted to research further about bathing in Japan on top of what I already knew. From experience, I knew that their ways of bathing are drastically different than ours. In Japan, the actual bath tub is where you relax; people are expected to wash their bodies off thoroughly before entering the bath. "Onsen" is the word for hot springs in Japanese. It is known for the naturally heated water from the geothermally heated springs. Often, the virtues of the "hadakano tsukiai", which means naked communication are talked about. Onsens are often visited by people who want to get away from their crazy/hectic lives, and the virtue states that the time spent at an onsen can be used to get to know people in the relaxing and homey atmosphere by breaking all the barriers.

My design is focused on having a very open atmosphere while giving a relaxed feel.

My self portrait is a series of different body parts of mine. This project probably took the longest to create out of all of the other projects that were assigned. Over all I thought it was pretty successful but if I were to change one thing, I would make it more sturdy so the project would literally stay together for a longer period of time. Right now, some of the pannels are falling apart due to the type of glue I used, and that does not look too good.

Metamorphosis...

We were assigned to create a project that is a mixture of two...project A and project B. Then, we were also assigned so create a project that is an in between of project A and the original mixture we came up with, and same went with project B. I used Hanna Selim's pencil box and Christyn Dunning's egg project as my two original projects to start off with.

So I started off my project with a few thumbnail sketches...

This is the iteration I came up with that is the middle of Hanna's project and Christyn's project...Although my final project looks NOTHING like my iteration, I did get some ideas off it. I used the idea of making my project a square, with the square cut out in the middle, which is a style I got off Hanna's pencil box. And then I used sticks to divide the square to show symmetry because that is what Christyn was portraying on her egg project.

This is my actual project that I ended up with. (The in between of Hanna's and Christyn's)

So now...this is the project that I came up with that is the mixture of my project and Hanna's pencil box. I tried incorporating more of Hanna's project by making it shaped very similar to her pencil box. As you can see, there are four pieces of wood that is inside against the walls, which shows symmetry. I chose the color black because that was the color in the middle of Hanna's project. It may be hard to see clearly, but the color of the wood inside is brown, just like like the color of Hanna's project looking from the outside.

This is the project that is the middle of Christyn's egg project and mine. I used the style of the four sticks that held the egg up. But instead of the egg like Christyn's I put a cube in the middle. I was trying to portray symmetry of the box just like Christyn did with her egg.

Memory.

"The container I am constructing is to hold memories of my senior year of high school, which is one of the most missed memories to me right now. My best friends and I made a mix (cd), which consists of songs that we used to listen to during our lunch breaks when we went out for that one-hour we ha every day. We also made a DVD photo slide show of prom and after prom. I would like to assemble something that will hold those two disks securely, so I can keep them without damaging them for a lifetime. I am thinking of creating a case with a mat board, so It can be very durable, and covering the mat board with either a nice textured paper or cloth. I picture the case to be rectangular, almost looking like a normal DVD case but a little bit more thick and sturdy. On the front of the case, I am thinking of putting a picture of my friends and I in the middle.”
This was my first iteration. But after our first critique, I decided that I wanted to construct something less literal. I didn't want my project to be an actual container that held a memory.

So this is my second iteration/my final project. I chose to pick out the most important memory of senior year, and that to me was graduation. When I finished my second iteration, I really liked how it came out. So for my final project, I decided to use my second iteration, do some touch ups, and fix the imperfections. The actual shape of the container(box) represents my life up until graduation. Coming from a small town in New Jersey, all my life I feel like I was stuck inside a security box. My graduating class consisted of a little over 100 students, and half of them I've been to school with since kindergarten. Everyone one knew each other in the school, and we all knew of one another's drama and business like it was our job. My high school and my town was a comfort zone to me, and when I walked down that aisle on graduation day, I felt like I was being released out of my security box since it was finally time for me to stand on my own. On the bottom of my box, there is a picture of my family and I. That day, I received a bouquet of sunflowers from them and the three sunflowers on the each side of the box represents a family member that showed up for me...my mom, my brother, and my cousin. The one empty side represents my father. Due to the fact that he lives all the way on the other side of the world, he could not make it to my graduation. I always wished that he could have been there to watch me complete a chapter of my life and wonder how proud of me he would have been.

egg project & inside the box

When we were first assigned this project, I was completely shocked. I had NO idea how I was going to design a place for an egg that celebrated a quality of the egg only using PAPER. I was honestly stumped for quite a while, but as we started to discuss our ideas among our groups, I became less confused. So I finally decided that I wanted to portray the symbolism of "life" of an egg. My final project consisted of three different stages of a tulip inside a square pot. The egg illustrated as the seed, and the three tulips were different growth stages of the flower. This is what my project ended up looking like...I could honestly say that for my first project, it was pretty successful.

When this project was first assigned, instantly, the colors black, red, and white came into mind. I knew that I definitely wanted to incorporate those colors into my project somehow. I wanted something simple. But not SO simple that my box looked super dull. I think by adding the red made my box appear very alive and not so flat-looking. My two iterations that I did were not so successful. I had many problems with the different adhesives I was using…they either left ugly stains on my box or didn’t hold up my box the way I wanted it to. It was almost like a test drive. I had to see which adhesive was the best for putting together certain parts of the box. So the photographs above are of my final project. For the most part, I believe that it came out pretty successful and a huge improvement from my two iterations.
